Are you into comics, animation, manga, illustration? Come discover the possibilities of visual storytelling! Teens will explore the artistic foundations necessary for telling stories through images. With an emphasis on comics as the main source of inspiration, the camp will also explore techniques found in film, animation, and video games.

Photography is more than just snapping pics—it’s about telling stories and expressing your creativity. In this camp, we’ll explore the basics of photography and editing on computers. Whether you dream of capturing epic landscapes or striking portraits, this camp will help you with the skills and confidence to achieve your photographic goals. We can’t wait to see the incredible images you will create! Camp requirements: digital camera or cell phone with camera and laptop, tablet or Chromebook.

Elevate your drawing skills and learn fundamental techniques for drawing the figure. In this week–long camp, we will introduce different tools for drawing the human form and encourage kids to develop their own style. We will also look at artists who have specialized in drawing the figure, for inspiration and insight into different approaches.

Come and learn to paint the landscape outdoors! Plein air painting camp explores the fundamentals of color, color mixing, painting technique and composition. Being outside allows the artist to consider color and light f irst–hand. While observing the beauty that surrounds us here on the banks of the St. Croix River, we will focus on painting from life and nature and breaking down the landscape to create quick, expressive paintings.

Teens get to work with Thomasina TopBear, artist of the recently completed mural on the Phipps building, for this exciting week of camp. Teens will learn the basics of creating murals using spray paint! Each student will be provided the space to learn and practice new techniques, and they will be given access to the tools needed to learn how to safely use spray paint outdoors. The final project will be a group mural for public display on a wall at the Phipps!

Come spend the week exploring the fabulous world of woven art. Together, we’ll explore various textures, weights, and types of yarn while weaving your very own work of woven art. This is a great camp for teens who are curious about learning how to weave, and those who want to take their weaving technique to the next level.

Learn to throw on the wheel for the first time or build the skills that you have already developed. This class will cover basic bowls and more advanced forms for students of all skill levels. All work will be fired with food–safe glazes. Look for an email from the Phipps when the pottery is ready for pick up, approximately two weeks after camp. Closed–toed shoes must be worn in the ceramics studio.

Be creative, together with your child this summer! Learn about clay and how to throw on the potter’s wheel side by side in the ceramic studio. Create cups and bowls, and experiment with different techniques for adding finishing touches to your work. All work is fired with food–safe glazes. Look for an email from the Phipps when the pottery is ready for pick up, approximately two weeks after camp. Closed–toed shoes must be worn in the ceramics studio.
