  • This class is a great way for dancers to learn fun new leaps and turns and to hone their skills. The instructor will focus on training dancers to execute advanced skills safely and with proper technique through drills that help dancers find their balance and power.

    Dress requirement: athletic clothing, turners or jazz shoes

    Week 5 | July 27–31

    Ages 11–13, Monday–Friday, 12:45–1:45 pm

    Ages 14–18, Monday–Friday, 1:45–2:45 pm

  • Adaptive Dance is designed for youth and young adults with special needs.

    The class will provide students the opportunity to express and learn in a creative, nurturing, and friendly environment. The goal of this class is to introduce students to the creative and expressive elements of dance while allowing self-expression and inspiring learning. The class will be interactive and involve fun activities such as circle time, stretching, sing-alongs, and creative movement. Students will work on independence, balance, self-confidence, and a love for music and movement. Parents and caregivers are invited to take part in the class.

    Dress requirement: Comfortable clothing. No specific dance shoes required.

  • Ballet technique is a foundational training for many forms of dance. Ballet classes at the Phipps focus on developing a dancer's understanding of correct alignment, proper use of turn out, coordination of the upper body, musicality, and strength. Classes are structured around classical training, emphasizing work at the barre and culminating with combinations and variations in center. Ballet vocabulary is built throughout each level and increases in difficulty.

    Dress requirement: black leotard, pink tights, pink ballet slippers

  • Ballet levels 3 and 4/5 and the option of taking an additional class for pointe work. Pointe technique builds on regular ballet technique and requires more advanced strength and technique to execute. Ballet technique class is required before pointe work to ensure dancers' muscles are warm and trained to perform en pointe.

  • Jazz dance classes at the Phipps will explore style, energy, and variety in both classical and contemporary jazz styles. Jazz dance is technical, dynamic, and heavy on musicality. Jazz training will develop strength, correct alignment, flexibility, rhythm, and expression in dancers. Classes will begin with a warm up then work on skills and combinations in center and across-the-floor to upbeat music.

  • Musical theater uses a variety of styles of dance to bring stories to life.

    In a fun and supportive environment, dancers of all abilities will learn techniques including classic footwork and turns, build awareness of how the whole body is the character, and work as a team. Explore choreography that makes the stage look like a party, the use of props, and improvisation.

  • Explore Hatha yoga and somatic strength training for conditioning and resiliency.

    This practice is supportive to all levels and therapeutically aligns with the season. Find steadiness & ease while learning to trust your body, integrate, protect your joints, increase core stabilization, build strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Somatic learning means slowing down and sensing the movement from the inside out to build awareness.

    Recommend: sticky mat, strap, block, and 1-2 blankets for this class
