Meet the artists at a public reception on Friday, May 3, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Once a month, from July 2018 through April 2019, a dedicated group of local artists gathered at The Phipps and off-site locations in the St. Croix River watershed for a series of seminars exploring the role of art and artists to effect change and create sustainable communities. This was the tenth year The Phipps organized these gatherings under the name What We Need is Here, taken from the title of a poem by Wendell Berry.
Under Our Feet features new work by participating artists that relates to their experiences during the seminar series. The title of the show refers to the subterranean ecosystem of roots, mycelium, and micro-organisms. In the artists’ hands, this unseen biospherebecomes a metaphor for regeneration, interdependence, adaptation, thrivability, and interconnectivity.
Participating artists: Gloria Adrian, Barb Bend, Amanda Bierbaum, Vicki Ehlers, Stephen Gates, Deanna Grigus, Theresa Harsma, Jan Hayman, Janet Houck, Patty Koubker Johnson, Paula Kelty, Steve King, Michaela Mahady, Cheryl Maplethorpe, Teri Power, Nan Riegel, Sue Rowe, Judy Saye-Willis, Theresa Schousek, Laura Tiede, Jill Waterhouse, and Linda Webster.
This project received funding from the St. Croix River Valley Foundation and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin
