Instructor: Dan Mackerman
Friday – Sunday
November 2 – 4
10:00 – 4:00 (1 hour break for lunch)
Materials: list will be provided
This workshop will be a crash course on some simple approaches to pastel painting.
Pastel is a medium that has been in use since the 18th century. And not always have pastel paintings been restricted to small intimate sizes either. Some 18th century pastels recently exhibited at the Ghetty Museum are over 6 feet in length!
The first day will be devoted mainly to demos, looking at examples and looking at supplies, tools and papers. Student sketching will complete the day. The following two days will be devoted to students producing their own completed pieces.
Among the topics covered will be: great examples of pastel painting, a simple step by step approach to developing a pastel painting, initial alcohol or watercolor washes, different papers, recommended soft pastel and pastel pencil brands, useful tools such as stomps, chamois and kneaded erasers and how to frame a pastel.
