Inspired by Nature: The 12th Annual Exhibition of the Great River Chapter of the American Society of Botanical Arts
Great River Chapter (GRC) is a nonprofit organization incorporated in Minnesota and serving the Upper Midwest region. It is a chapter of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA). 2019 marks the 12th Annual Exhibit of The Great River Chapter of ASBA. The artwork in this year’s exhibit, all created in the year leading up to the show, includes colored pencil, watercolor, gouache, graphite, and pen and ink on fine cotton papers and vellum. Some pieces combine mediums, such as graphite and colored pencil or watercolor.
Contemporary botanical art strives to combine scientific accuracy, a high level of technical skill, and artworks that captivate. The discipline of botanical art allows the artist to be present in the natural world around them and to offer this world to viewers. Plants are portrayed in a beautiful way but can be recognized as belonging to a specific genus and species, helping viewers gain familiarity with the natural world.
The GRC was formed in November 2002 with 23 members. Today, the organization has grown to over 80 members from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa. Chapter activities and events can be found at grcbotanicalartists.org.
