Abbey Fitzpatrick – Atrium Gallery

Starting DateDecember 6, 2019

Ending DateJanuary 12, 2020

Event Description

“The individual parts of the assemblages come from my love for the form, patinas and textures of ordinary functional objects. By removing these parts from their original function, I hope the audience will look at them differently, and perhaps see the beauty in these parts that I do.”

Abbey Fitzpatrick, of Minneapolis, MN, is a painter and assemblage artist. She attended Studio Arts College International, Florence, Italy, in 2000, and received her BFA (2002) and MFA in Painting (2005) from Kendall College of Art and Design, Grand Rapids, MI. Fitzpatrick was Adjunct Professor in the Fine Arts Departments of Kendall College of Art and Design and Grand Rapids Community College (2005-2015.) She has used “found” objects in her paintings since 2002 and more recently began to create assemblages from these assorted objects, influenced by characters and stories her mother created for her as a child.

“My assemblages fit primarily in five groupings: Plane Folk, Matchbox Men, Bellows Fellows, Chess Pieces and Door Plate Dodos. These characters have names and backstories. They are composed of unexpected components that I have repurposed for my own enjoyment and the pleasure of the audience. The individual parts of the assemblages come from my love for the form, patinas and textures of ordinary functional objects. By removing these parts from their original function, I hope the audience will look at them differently, and perhaps see the beauty in these parts that I do.”

Fitzpatrick has exhibited in individual and group shows in Michigan and Minnesota, most recently at Hudson (WI) Hospital Healing Arts (2019); WARM New Member Show, The Southern Theater, Minneapolis (2017); and West Michigan Regional Competition – Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, MI (2015, 2014). Her awards include a Golden Apple Artist Residency, Ripley’s Neck, ME (2012). She curated the show “Anguish and Hope” at the Vine Arts Center, Minneapolis, in 2017, and has been a juror for numerous Michigan art shows. Her work is in the collections of the Grand Haven Community Foundation, the West Michigan Symphony, Muskegon Community College and many private individuals.
