The Phipps Ceramics Studio offers opportunities for all ages and skill levels to work with clay. Every fall, winter and spring, the schedule includes pottery on the wheel classes for teens and adults, open studio access for artists to work independently and workshops focused on specific techniques. We also host private groups and, throughout Summer Arts Camp, offer dozens of classes for children ages 4 and up.

Fee: $98 per couple, including a beverage voucher to be redeemed that evening at the Phipps concession
Join your partner (or a friend) for an evening in the Ceramics Studio and learn how to throw a pot on the potter’s wheel. Participants will be shown a wheel throwing demonstration and given lots of time to practice working on the wheel, with instructor guidance. Students will choose a glaze color for the instructor to finish the pieces, which will be ready for pick up 2-3 weeks after the class. Class size is limited to 3 couples/6 individuals.

Eight Tuesdays, January 24 - March 14

Learn basic techniques for throwing pots on the potter’s wheel and develop skills for working with clay. Students also will receive 8 hours of studio access per week to work on projects independently and must sign-up for these open studio timeslots on a weekly basis to secure a wheel to work on. Class size is limited to eight; minimum 4.

Intermediate and advanced participants will build on skills acquired in Beginning Pottery on the Wheel and learn more complicated techniques for working with clay to create forms such as plates, lidded jars, tea pots, pitchers, etc. The instructor will offer demonstrations throughout the session and will provide one-on-one time with students to work through your own ideas. In this class, students will learn how to fire an electric kiln by having the chance to participate in the loading with the guidance of the instructor. Students will also receive 8 hours of studio access per week to work on projects independently and must sign-up for time slots on a weekly basis to secure a wheel to work on. Class size is limited to 8; minimum 4.

Thursday - Saturday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.

Open Studio is available to adults who want to practice their wheel throwing and hand-building skills. Participants must have taken an 8-week ceramics course at the Phipps within the last 3 years -- no instruction will be provided during this 8-week session. Participants can sign up for up to 10 hours of studio access per week. They will receive 25 lbs of clay, access to pottery wheels, clay tools, kiln firing and glazes (additional clay can be purchased for $20/25 lb. bag). Studio participants must sign-up for timeslots online on a weekly basis in order to secure a space to work. The number of Open Studio participants is limited to eight.

In this class students will learn how to make pottery without the use of the potter’s wheel. Students will learn a variety of handbuilding techniques including pinch, coil, and slab, with the theme of the class being items to be used in a kitchen setting. This class is a great option for people who want to make functional pottery but don’t want to use a pottery wheel or students looking to learn new ways of working with clay. Open to all skill levels. Students will receive 8 hours of studio time per week to work on projects independently during the four weeks and must sign up for time slots on a weekly basis to secure a space to work in the studio. Class size is limited to 8; minimum 4.
