Susan Strand-Penman of Hudson, WI, is a sculptor working in ceramics. She received her BFA in Ceramics and Fibers from University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 1994. Her influences include the urban excitement of Minneapolis and St. Paul and the quiet beauty of the St. Croix River Valley.

I am interested in exploring how nature and its landscape influence the human experience. The changing seasons excite a myriad of emotions, and the human journey from winter to spring is a story that has been retold by many cultures throughout history. Helpless to the long dark sleep of winter, dreams shift from the monochrome of snow and ice and awaken to the color and light of spring.

Working in a malleable medium, such as clay, allows me to explore textures using many different techniques. My sculptures are hand built using slabs and multiple layers of added or removed clay. Each piece is individual and creates a unique story that grows intuitively from the clay.

Recent exhibitions of her work include Animals in Art, Edina (MN) Art Center (invited, 2017); The Figure Show 2017, Minnetonka Center for the Arts, Wayzata, MN (juried, 2017); Wisconsin Regional Artist Program, River Falls Public Library, River Falls, WI (2015, 2016, 2017); Stories the Lands Tell, ArtReach St. Croix Gallery, Stillwater, MN (juried, 2016); National Parks Personal Narratives, The Phipps Center for the Arts, Hudson, WI (juried, 2016); ArtsWest, L.E. Phillips Memorial Library, Eau Claire, WI (juried, 2016); Arts in Harmony, Elk River, MN (juried, 2nd Place Ceramic Award, 2016); and Healing Arts Exhibition, Westfield Hospital, New Richmond, WI (2015). Her sculptures are shown at Seasons on the St. Croix Gallery, Hudson, and Art Resources Gallery, International Market Square, Minneapolis, MN.
